Frequently Asked Questions

Everything people ask about the SerialMint serial number generator, answered directly.

Are the generated serial numbers unique?+
Each serial is generated independently at random, and the tool discards any duplicate it produces within a single batch, so every serial in one batch is unique. Randomness does not guarantee uniqueness across batches — for production inventories, always check generated serials against your own database before assigning them.
Can I use these as real software license keys?+
No. Real product keys are issued by software vendors and verified by their activation servers. The strings this tool produces are random and have no relationship to any vendor's key database — they will not activate any software, and should never be presented as genuine keys.
Is the serial number generator free?+
Yes — unlimited use, no account, no sign-up and no watermarks. The tool runs entirely in your browser, which is also why it costs nothing to offer: there is no server doing the work and no data being collected.
How are the serials randomized?+
Each character is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's built-in cryptographically secure random number generator, with rejection sampling to avoid modulo bias. Nothing is sent over the network — generation happens locally on your device.
What is the difference between a serial number and a product key?+
A serial number typically identifies a specific physical item — a laptop, a hard drive, a batch of products — and is assigned by the manufacturer. A product key (also called a software key or activation key) certifies that a copy of a software program is genuine and is entered during installation. This tool generates serial-number-style strings, not valid keys for any real software.
Can I download my serial numbers?+
Yes. Use Copy all to put the whole batch on your clipboard, or Download .txt to save a plain-text file with one serial per line — a format that imports cleanly into spreadsheets and databases.
What character sets can I choose from?+
Four: uppercase letters plus digits (A-Z, 0-9), digits only (0-9), hexadecimal (0-9, A-F), and uppercase letters only (A-Z). You can also set 1 to 6 segments, 1 to 12 characters per segment, a hyphen, space or no separator, and an optional custom prefix. The formats guide explains what each choice is for.
Do my generated serials leave my device?+
No. The generator is a static page: all computation happens in your browser via the Web Crypto API. The site sets no cookies, runs no analytics and stores nothing — refresh the page and your generated serials are gone. See the privacy policy for the full picture.
What is a check digit?+
A check digit is a final character in some serial formats that is computed from the rest of the serial by a fixed algorithm, such as the Luhn formula. When the serial is typed in, software recomputes the check digit to catch typos. SerialMint generates random test serials and does not compute check digits for any vendor's scheme.
How many serials can I generate at once?+
Up to 100 per click. For larger test datasets, generate multiple batches and download each as a text file, then combine them.
